Buettner began by expanding on the work of demographers in <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/15489066\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener sponsored\" data-wpel-link=\"external\"><i>The Journal of Experimental Gerontology<\/i><\/a>. The Blue Zones aren\u2019t bound by a single diet, faith, or lifestyle, but, according to Buettner, they have more in common than not.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re living vibrant, active, happy lives, and perhaps the biggest takeaway is that they\u2019re living longer without trying [to],\u201d Buettner says in the first episode of the new docuseries, titled \u201cThe Journey Begins.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There are a few more specific definitions of what a Blue Zone is\u2014<a href=\"http:\/\/austriaca.at\/0xc1aa500e_0x00307bb6.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener sponsored\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">including one used<\/a> by Michel Poulain, Anne Herm and Gianni Pes, the original demographers who coined the term\u2014but Buettner\u2019s definition is relatively straightforward. Per the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bluezones.com\/blue-zones-institute-founders-statement\/#section-2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener sponsored\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">Blue Zones official website<\/a>, a Blue Zone should \u201cshow a statistically significant higher longevity compared to national levels and display various features related to their lifestyle, nutrition, genetics and both human and physical environmental conditions that might be considered as determinants for living longer and better.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div><\/section>\n<div  class='hr av-lm02nvlu-c8f785ede22d1f7d19eb095f274eb01b hr-short  avia-builder-el-3  el_after_av_textblock  el_before_av_textblock  hr-center '><span class='hr-inner '><span class=\"hr-inner-style\"><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<section class=\"av_textblock_section \"  itemscope=\"itemscope\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/BlogPosting\" itemprop=\"blogPost\" ><div class='avia_textblock  '   itemprop=\"text\" ><h2><strong>Essential Keys<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Known as the Power 9, there are nine evidence-based common denominators that unite life in Blue Zones.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><b>Move naturally<\/b>: According to Blue Zones lore, the people who live longest don\u2019t abide by <a href=\"https:\/\/honehealth.com\/edge\/fitness\/best-push-pull-legs-routine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\">strict fitness schedules<\/a> or engage with intense athletic activity much at all. Instead, their lives require them to move around naturally\u2014like having to walk to a market for produce, or step outside and tend to a garden in the afternoon.<\/li>\n<li><b>Purpose<\/b>: Blue Zones research suggests that purpose\u2014known as <i>ikigai<\/i> in the Okinawan Blue Zone or <i>plana de vida <\/i>in the Nicoyan one\u2014can add up to seven years of life expectancy.<\/li>\n<li><b>Downshift<\/b>: While their methods for achieving this \u201cdownshift\u201d are very different, all Blue Zones natives know how to <a href=\"https:\/\/honehealth.com\/edge\/health\/ways-to-reduce-stress-anxiety\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\">destress<\/a> when needed. Consistent stress can lead to <a href=\"https:\/\/honehealth.com\/edge\/health\/inflammaging\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\">chronic inflammation<\/a>, which is connected to all age-related diseases.<\/li>\n<li><b>80 percent rule<\/b>: Blue Zones natives eat plenty, but they stop before they\u2019re uncomfortably full. Okinawan Blue Zone natives live by the 2,500-year-old Confucian mantra <a href=\"https:\/\/health.clevelandclinic.org\/dont-eat-until-youre-full-instead-mind-your-hara-hachi-bu-point\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener sponsored\" data-wpel-link=\"external\"><i>hara hachi bu<\/i><\/a> which specifies eating until you\u2019re 80 percent full.<\/li>\n<li><b>Plant slant<\/b>: The people in the Blue Zones are not vegetarian, but meat seems like more of an infrequent side dish than the star of every meal. Instead, it\u2019s beans, lentils, fava, soybeans, and so on that make up the core of Blue Zones protein intake. According to Buettner, meat protein (which is mostly pork in the Blue Zones) is eaten about five times a month.<\/li>\n<li><b>Wine at 5<\/b>: This may come as a surprise, but all Blue Zones residents, bar the Seventh Day Adventists in Loma Linda, California, drink alcohol regularly, albeit in moderation\u2014usually just one or two small glasses of wine daily. Buettner says it\u2019s best to do this with the company of family or friends (more on that later).<\/li>\n<li><b>Belong<\/b>: According to Buettner\u2019s research, only one out of nearly 300 centenarians interviews in the Blue Zones did not belong to a faith-based community. There isn\u2019t a specific denomination or religion that connects the Blue Zones, but the presence of faith-based groups is common throughout.<\/li>\n<li><b>Loved ones first<\/b>: Another common thread throughout the Blue Zones is a commitment to family\u2014children housing and caring for elderly parents within their own homes, families helping young couples with child rearing, and so on. Time spent with a life partner as well as children also plays an important role.<\/li>\n<li><b>Right tribe<\/b>: This basically means finding community and friendship that supports a healthy lifestyle.
